I came in not knowing whether my concern was even worth raising. The Standing Review helped me see clearly — there was a legitimate issue, and Mr Ahmad Hafiz explained what it was without making me feel foolish for not having spotted it myself. The written note was something I could keep and refer back to. I found that very grounding.

The dispute assistance was worth it. My pension payment had been reduced without any explanation I could understand, and I had already spent months going in circles on my own. Nora at Sandaran Law handled the correspondence from that point — I didn't have to write another letter. The matter took about three months to resolve, which was longer than I'd hoped, but I was kept informed the whole way through.

After my husband passed, I was managing his pension arrangements on behalf of our family and I simply didn't know where to start. The Retirement Income Guidance service was exactly what I needed — someone who would check in regularly and help me understand each step as it came. The pace was gentle. I never felt rushed into anything.

I had tried another firm first. They quoted me a different amount at the end from what was discussed at the start. Sandaran Law was the opposite — the fee was in writing, there were no additions, and the work was done as described. Simple and honest. That's what I needed.

The Standing Review gave me a clear answer — there wasn't a strong basis for the appeal I was considering, and the lawyer explained why without making me feel bad about having asked. That clarity was actually a relief. I know where I stand now, and I spent RM 155 rather than much more chasing something unlikely to succeed.

What I valued most was not having to become an expert myself. Every letter, every submission — they handled it. Zulkifli called to let me know when something new had come in and what it meant. I could get on with the rest of my life while knowing the matter was being attended to properly.

Case Studies

Some situations we've helped with

Names and identifying details have been changed. These are illustrative of the kinds of matters we handle.

Challenge

Pension stopped without explanation

A retired civil servant in his early sixties found that his pension payments had stopped without any notification. He had made several calls to the relevant department but received no clear explanation and was uncertain of his legal position.

What we did

Dispute and Appeal Assistance

We conducted a Standing Review first to establish the legal position, then moved to Dispute Assistance. We submitted a formal request for information and filed an appeal documenting the procedural irregularity. All subsequent correspondence was handled by our team.

Outcome

Payments reinstated, arrears recovered

Within approximately 11 weeks, the payments were reinstated and arrears covering the outstanding period were received. The client described the resolution as a considerable relief to his family's household finances.

"I had almost accepted that nothing could be done. I was wrong to think that."

Challenge

Uncertainty following a spouse's death

A widow in Melaka found herself managing unfamiliar pension documentation after her husband passed away. She was unsure which entitlements transferred to her, what timelines applied, and who she needed to contact.

What we did

Retirement Income Guidance

We started with a careful review of the available documentation and prepared a written plain-language summary of her entitlements and options. We then moved into ongoing guidance, providing regular check-ins as the administration progressed across several months.

Outcome

Full picture established, transfer completed

Over approximately five months, the surviving spouse entitlements were confirmed and correctly transferred. The client reported that having a consistent person to call throughout the process was the most valuable part of the support.

"It was a difficult time. Knowing someone was watching over this particular matter helped."

Challenge

Suspected calculation error in pension amount

A recently retired professional noticed that her monthly pension seemed lower than expected based on her years of service. She wasn't sure whether the discrepancy was significant enough to pursue or whether she had simply misunderstood the calculation.

What we did

Standing Review, then Appeal

The Standing Review confirmed a potential discrepancy in the pensionable service calculation. We moved to the Dispute Assistance service and formally requested a review of the computation with supporting documentation showing the correct service period.

Outcome

Recalculation accepted, monthly amount corrected

The recalculation was accepted and the corrected monthly amount was applied going forward, along with a backdated adjustment. The review and appeal combined took around eight weeks from the date of instruction.

"Starting with the review was the right call. I knew what I was dealing with before spending more."
